I can tell you from my research that this class is standing in front of the 1901 Public School building that sat in the same exact spot as the current 1936 Elementary school that is in danger of being demolished. The 1901 building was a majestic school with a cupola and bell and a large assembly hall. Before 1920, a section burned and the cupola was lost, the people rebuilt and removed the top section.By 1936 they took apart the 1901 building and using the hand chiseled limestone rocks and the interior materials, they started rebuilding their new school in April of 1936 and completed it by November 1936. The 1936 elem of today is a product of the remants of the original 'rock school'. The elderly who went to school in the 1901 majestic 'rock school', still call it simply , the 'rock school'. The 1936 elementary building honors it original by the simple rose window above the front door facing camden. Truly a historical site and story and all has been found eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
