Charles Gay and Pluto, Gay's Lion Farm, El Monte, Calif.

Gay's Lion Farm was a tourist attraction and a lion breeding facility just west of the south-east junction of Peck Road and Valley Boulevard in El Monte, California. It operated from 1925 through 1942, when it was closed temporarily due to wartime meat shortages. It was never reopened.

At one time, the farm housed the MGM Lion and several lions used in Tarzan movies.

The owners, Charles and Muriel Gay were former circus performers.

Charles & Muriel Gay

My grandparents were never circus performers. He worked for an animal dealer in England and more or less was self taught in animal training. She was a newspaper woman in London sent to interview this new french lion tamer who was making a reputation for himself. They spent the next 40 years together.
