Dr. Thomas Harlan Purviance and Sarah Maxson

Dr. Thomas Harlan Purviance was born June 15, 1841 in Ohio. At the age of 19 he became a teacher in the public schools near Steubenville. After teaching three terms he entered New Athens College and graduated in 1841. After teaching three years he started medical studies under Dr. John Leslie, a physician and surgeon , who had practiced medicine in Steubenville for many years. In the fall of 1850 he entered the Physio Medical College at Cincinnati where he completed the full course of studies, graduating in 1852. He began his medical practice in Westchester, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. A year later he moved to Jewett, Ohio where he practiced medicine until 1874. In the spring of 1874 he moved to Steubenville where he continued his practice as physician and surgeon until his death February 21, 1891. On October 27, 1836, he married Sarah Maxson, daughter of Nathan and Susannah Dix Maxson of Pennsylvania. He and his wife had six children: Dr. J.F. Purviance of Steubenville, Nathan Maxson Purviance of Kansas City, Mrs. Mary Ann Lowmiller of Salineville, Samuel T. Purviance of Barton County, Missouri, William A. Purviance of Rosedale Kansas and Thomas Purviance of Steubenville. Sarah Maxson Purviance, shown her with her husband, was born December 9, 1816. She died August 30, 1895 in Steubenville, Ohio
